My Thoughts on Current Events

Well, considering that my cover is blown, I thought I would give my take on things. Hundreds of people have been visiting my blog recently because its URL was provided by a certain other blog that I don’t feel inclined to link to at the moment. I feel I should point out that a lot of the information being foisted around — especially some of the juicier tidbits — are not accurate. Here’s a nice bulleted list of some points I’d like to make:

  • I have been separated from Christine (not otherwise known as Christina) for over a year, and we are currently in the process of getting a divorce. New York requires that married couples go through a year of separation before amicable divorce proceedings can take place.
  • I have residential custodianship of our son, and my main concern is protecting him from any/all of the drama associated with recent events. I am very concerned about the charges against his mother. Until I am certain that she has a safe environment for him to visit, he’ll be staying here with me.
  • Christine and I had a rough relationship, like many couples do. When we split it was a mutual decision, and it’s been a really positive thing for me.
  • Most of all I feel really bad for my son, and if I have anything to do with it he will remain unaware of these events for a long, long time.
  • I think it’s really unfortunate that a person with gripes against Christine would take this opportunity to divulge information that is, at best, off the mark and, at worst, wildly inaccurate. This situation is bad enough. Whoever the informant is, I’m certain that he never intended to defend anyone, and that he is using this situation to get back at Christine, so all of that juicy gossip on that dark little corner of the Internet should be taken with a healthy shake of salt. As consumers of information, we should always be conscious of the nature of the information-provider. Just like you would check a box of cereal to make sure its nutritional data contains no mention of strychnine, you should research the guy pouring you a crunchy bowl of gossip.

  1. I just wanted to say I’m really impressed you took the time to set things straight. I have a great deal of respect for your priority of protecting your son. I hope this all goes away very, very soon.

  2. ineffable infinitude Says:

No matter what the gossip mongers say about you, You’ll always be old Greg to me…

at least wait for the song and dance routine, although it’ll be tempting to stop it after “mangina.”

  3. ineffable infinitude Says:

    wtf mate?

  4. Hey, sorry if I pulled in any linkage due to my linkage.

  5. No worries. This blog was found through another page.

  6. Joe Cole Says:

Rock on G, I’ll never Kraft Dinner again!

  7. student Says:

yeah man, no more Kraft Dinner.
You have to understand how famous this guy is in Canada. He’s like Matt Damon or something, with a Mr Nice Guy image.
So people are going to be shocked at this type of thing, as the BNL have been publically clean for 20 years, it appears.

He was very high profile in politics, the environment, charity, and all sorts of things.

Once the trial happens, then it’ll all be over, at least the public drama of it.

  8. student Says:

also, that gossip blogger guy, anyone can see he is just trying to stir things up as much as possible for his own reasons.

But if one thinks about it, a trial could be very ugly, with fingers pointing. Well…stuff happens sometimes.

  9. student Says:

    last post,

if you scan canadian papers, you will find countless stories about this.
This one points to how integrated this band was in the canadian psyche.
You will also see how the canadian media is playing softball with this guy, many even denying it happened as reported.

  10. As for the blogger douche nozzle in question: the bottom line is that he’s a pathetic nobody that acts like a scumbag in a futile effort to convince people he’s a somebody. A cursory google search shows what a complete laughing stock and grotesque caricature of a human being he really is. He’s also spectacularly weird looking, an alcoholic and has a criminal record. Be forewarned: as the “drama” wanes, there’s a chance he’ll attempt to fan the flames via this site since he is a bottom feeder and a professional griefer. I might consider turning off comments for the time being, or just relocating/removing the site entirely.

  11. He’s also racist, homophobic and a holocaust denier (for real).

  12. I had Much Music growing up. That makes me practically half-Canadian. I own a Tea Party album for crissakes. Econoline Crush? Moist? Need I go on? So yeah, I’m aware of the image thing surrounding the BNL. They were extremely popular in the States while I was in college in ‘98-’99. It was never really my thing. I had just discovered experimental music at the time and was cutting my teeth on Einsturzende Neubauten, Coil, Skinny Puppy and others.

I’m waiting for a resolution to this whole mess. I think I’m done reading about it for a while, to be honest. Most of the info is recycled junk anyway, and the situation itself has become just another talking point for self-righteous moralizing from all corners.

I’d like to add that any attempt to shame me for my interest in tabletop roleplaying games is pretty much absurd. Here I am publicly blogging about them on a regular basis. Whether or not someone else considers them childish doesn’t give me pause. It’s noteworthy that the first modern wargame — played with toy soldiers — was invented by a grown man named H. G. Wells, who understood both the multi-generational appeal of these sorts of games as well as their limited audience. Different strokes for different folks. Although it’s difficult to take such criticism personally when it comes from a source that is so obviously (and self-consciously) damaged and consumed by self-loathing. (That’s coming from a compassionate place, and is not meant to be an attack on anyone.) I can understand the loneliness and isolation that sets a negative cycle like that in motion. I gave up hating people a while back, and I’ve never regretted the decision.

  13. student Says:

he just wants to get a rise out of people, to get attention for the blog, so they press buttons to try to get some outrage going.

no sane or normal person is going to make any inferences to other people close to the story.

in reality, the story is not that dramatic, happens everyday.
of course, for the people in it, its more serious.

the only wrinkle I see from an outsider, is the other girl telling the cops about the canadian money, etc. Trying to point the serious blame at the guy. That could get ugly.

but the story does have legs, until all the appeals are done, it will go on and on.

  14. That guy Crook is a s**head. _I’m_ a grown man who plays RPGs. _He’s_ a infantile idiot with a blog.

  15. the other girl didn’t actually say that at all, cops are sneaky assholes. that blogger should die a thousand deaths and dragging greg into it and saying stupid shit about him is just as low and everything else.

  16. I’m not too worried about it, S. He’s an extremely easy target. (C’mon, an ex-Mormon anti-semitic homophobe?) I’d really (REALLY) rather not feed into his appetite for negative attention though, which ultimately is what all this is about. And I would definitely be locking the doors at night, if I were you.

    Melvin — I couldn’t agree more.

  17. Some guy Says:

Not that you care in the least about a completely random stranger’s opinion, but I sincerely hope that this goes well (painless?) for you and especially for your son. I have no idea who you are, but I have an extremely high opinion of you after reading this entry.

  18. Thanks, “Some Guy”, Amber, H, Braden, Matt, Melvin, S. and Student for your sentiments. I’m confident that everything is going to turn out hunky-dory, though there may be a few more bumps along the way.

  19. I am so sorry you’re being pulled into this mess. You have my ultimate respect and I honor you for keeping your priorities straight.

FWIW, you sound pretty cool, too. Yeah, i’m a girl who goes to sci fi and anime cons with all of the boys and has a blast with RPG. Nothing wrong with that in my book.

As far as the bumps are concerned, they’re the ones that give you character. And keep you on your toes. Been there, done that — just not as publicly as you. Life is too damn short but worth the ride (or should that be game?).

  20. Thanks, LS. Way to wave the gamer/anime fan flag, too! I haven’t done the convention thing for over ten years — not that I wouldn’t be up for it. All the action seems to be going on in the Midwest, and I’m always broke for some reason.

  21. Maybe someone working for WoTC is also a BNL fan and will send you all of the D&D books and supplements due to this time of familial turmoil.

While we’re wishing, how about a set of the current edition of M:TG and anything else they want to throw in. (D&D minis maybe?)

To, you know, ease your time of suffering.

  22. *SOB* Give me all your books and cards and minis! Fill the hole in my soul!
