Shrimp Cracker(s)

While some Asian food and drink is way scary, there are a few safe bets. I’m fond of these Shrimp Cracker (that’s what it says on the bag, man). They’re basically fry-shaped chips with a mild shrimp flavor. They smell like fishfood but they’d probably be good with a beer. I dunno, maybe it’s the fact that my grandmother is Norwegian and was constantly introducing me to strange forms of canned fish (it’s a Scandinavian thing, you see) that has rendered me immune to the fish-phobia that is so rampant in the US. The whole fishy taste/smell thing never seems to bother me.

I’m also a fan of Shin Ramyun Noodle Soup, another Nong Shim product — basically really spicy ramen that comes with this cute little packet of dried veggie essence. After years of living on nothing but ramen, I can say unequivocally that this is the best stuff I’ve ever had. The Courvoisier of instant soups.

  1. remember the shrimp chips I used to fry up for us? yum yum. I still get them from time to time.

  2. Yeah, the good ones were the squid chips. I should have mentioned them in this post. I bet they would actually be healthy if we fried them in olive oil. It’s all about the good cholesterol. Keeps the neurons greased.

  3. mmmm… greasy synapses
